Hunter offshore wind project opens door to job, investment opportunities
Equinor country representative Thomas Hansen admitted the Hunter was an attractive area for the development of offshore wind projects.
“That’s mainly due to the strong wind resources, energy demand, infrastructure, industrial capabilities and workforce already there,” he said.
“Offshore wind also provides the perfect opportunity to diversify Newcastle’s economy by pivoting thousands of jobs in the local manufacturing, construction, maritime, transport and logistics industries into the renewable energy sector.
“In addition, the accessibility of the Port of Newcastle and our existing local skills base would allow offshore wind to precipitate the emergence of a new renewable energy industry in Newcastle and the Hunter.

The University of Newcastle has announced that from 2023 onwards, all undergraduate programs will include a placement embedded in a workplace.
The rollout of work-integrated learning to all degrees is with good reason, with data from the Australian Skills Commission report in 2021 finding that 75 per cent of employers look for experience before considering an applicant, while 40 per cent of roles are given to someone known to the employer.
In March 2021, the NSW Government announced the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) concept as an NSW Government commitment, in response to the Review on the NSW vocational education and training (VET) sector – ‘Gonski-Shergold Review’.
TAFE NSW is leading two pilot IATs with university and industry partners and education providers, one in Digital Tech and another in Construction. The NSW Government has committed $222.5 million to design and construct the two pilot Institutes, and a further $108.5 million to support more than 26,000 students over the next four years at the two IATs.
The IATs are a NSW Government priority that will reshape the way people access skills and tertiary education.

Safe Work Australia has released a 10-year national strategy designed to reduce workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses
The need for an ongoing dedication and commitment from all stakeholders — governments, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), workers, industry, unions and WHS practitioners — to continue to ensure that workers return home safely remains critically important.
Serious injury and illness across Australian workplaces directly impacts workers and their families.
Australia has further to go in improving WHS outcomes and ensuring the WHS system is ready to address emerging challenges over the next ten years.
Safe Work Australia suggests that reducing hazardous incidents can contribute to significant economic growth — some tens of billions of dollars each year, and that to make further gains, it is essential that WHS is core to how Australian workplaces do business.
WHS conversations need to be commonplace in every workplace across the country, with education, innovation, and collaboration critical enablers of safety success.

Surge in medicinal cannabis use creates growing problem for WA’s mining industry
Mining companies in Western Australia are standing down workers who legally use prescription cannabis, as they struggle to determine what level of use makes an employee unfit for work.
Tom received a prescription for medicinal cannabis about a year ago after a devastating family tragedy.
“I was on sleeping tablets for a year … and they didn’t really agree with me,” he said.
“I could actually go to sleep [after taking medicinal cannabis].
“Because you’re pretty time poor up there … you need to have a shower, have dinner, and go to sleep as quick as you can.”
Last week, the WA parliament’s Select Committee on Cannabis and Hemp recommended reforms to the way medicinal cannabis was regulated.
But the mining industry urged caution.
In its submission, the Chamber of Minerals and Energy said the lack of consensus on impairment, led to the current strict approach.
